Don't worry. It's just me.

It’s my birthday, I’’ll just be me today

I've always liked the fact that my birthday comes right before spring.  It gives me a chance to take a fresh look at life and see what I can do to re-invent myself, to see what things I can simplify, and make more efficient.  But also to see new ways to enjoy life, which is just too darn short and goes by too damn quick to waste it.  Just a few observations my life so far and I'll keep moving through the day.  And thanks for all the well-wishing, you happy birthday well-wishers out there!

Here I go:

Recent revelations:
  • Don't use a hand pruner when a bush trimmer will do the job 20 times faster. (Just watch those fingers.  Remember, you use them to type!)
  • Hiding in boxes lying around are lots of things to give to Goodwill, and plenty to throw the heck out. Lighten up, get rid of stuff. Simplify life.
Things I bought for $30:
  • My first car - 1956 Dodge with push button gear shifting
  • 2 front row tickets to Pink Floyd doing the premier of Dark Side of the Moon '69 ish1 year before its release
  • 1 blank VHS videotape - somewhere in the 80s-90s
  • Take-out sushi for 2 last week

Things I bought for $2,000:
  • First new car.  1971 VW beetle
  • First computer. 1980 IBM-PC w/48K RAM, 160KB floppy, mono
  • My last laptop 2009 w/8GB ram, 500 GB drive, High Def

Strange things I've seen on TV:
  • Ultraviolent, nonpolitically correct cartoons like Tom and Jerry, Road Runner, and the ever fighting Popeye the Sailor Man
  • Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald - (live! In black and white!)
  • First person walking on the moon
  • Paris Hilton

Events I didn't grasp the significance of at the time:
  • The first human goes into space. Not the US.  Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited the earth 1961.
  • NBC makes the first coast-to-coast color broadcast, telecasting the Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 1954

Events I did grasp the significance of when they happened
  • Meeting Linda
  • When my kids turned into people - an absolute mind blower
  • My first internet experience - 1996 - changed me forever

Things I didn't do when I was a younger:
  • Wear a helmet when I rode my bike
  • Worry about safe sex
  • Use seat belts

Things I look forward to in the future:
  • Personally controlling all of the world's resources (It will be so subtle no one will notice I've done it.)
  • Learning another language, preferably one that not spoken
  • Exploring arc-welding, because everyone needs a noisy hobby and a creative outlet

Happy birthday!

I don't have the same references, as I grew up in Sweden with a different currency. But it is really cool to see how things changed.

I remember going to the movie matinees (when my parents gave me money) back in the mid-70's.

I walked on my own to the movie theatre (just 2 blocks away) when I was 6 or 7. A ticket was about 25c (at the 1975 exchange rate of about 4 SEK to 1 USD) if I recall correctly.

My first computer was a 386SX (1 MB RAM, 40 MB harddisk) and cost me about $6000 in late 1989...

In early 1991 I bought a 486DX motherboard with processor for about half that...
